Test Dyne Level of Corona-Treated Films without Dyne Solutions

Tantec's NEW CAM-FILM-T Contact Angle Meter for Film Converters

Wetting tension of corona treated films belongs to a group of physical parameters for which no standards exist. All we know is what is measured. In such cases the precision of the test method is of utmost importance.

Until now, converters have primarily used "dyne" liquids and "dyne" pens to test the level of surface treatment of flexible films. That method is known for its low precision and subjectivity. In a recent round robin testing, sponsored by the Flexible Packaging Association technical committee, results of measurements of identical materials taken by different labs using dyne liquids varied by as much as 11 to 15 dyne/cm.

Contact Angle Meter for Films

The new improved Model CAM-FILM-T contact angle meter provides an excellent alternative to dyne liquids. It utilizes a more analytical and repeatable water contact angle method of measuring wetting tension. The CAM-FILM is an inexpensive and simple instrument for use on production lines or in a QA lab.

Contact Angle Helps Determine Dyne Level

The water contact angle on a uniform film surface depends on a specific property of the surface: wetting tension measured in dyne/cm. The higher the wetting tension of the film, the better its wettability and the smaller the contact angle. The CAM-FILM generates unambiguous and repeatable data, which can be easily translated into dyne/cm.

CAM-FILM Offers:

  • High repeatability and precision
  • Easy correlation with dynes/cm
  • Generates data for SPC
  • Eliminates judgment calls
  • Eliminates use of toxic dyne liquids

Product Description:

Model CAM-FILM is a bench-top optical device incorporating a special light source and a projection screen with a protractor. A special film specimen holder holds a sample while a micrometer syringe dispenses precise droplets of water on the measured surface. The droplet's image is projected on the screen so that an operator can take an accurate direct measurement. The instrument is equipped with a built-in spot ionizer to keep the sample free of static charges.

Specifications:

  • Measured range 10 to 120 degrees
    (72 to 25 dyne/cm)
  • Film thickness 10 mil max
  • Droplet size adjustable, 1ul min.
  • Dispenser capacity 150-200 droplets
  • Film sample size 1" wide strips
  • Accuracy + 2

CAM-FILM Capabilities:

1. Can accurately measure practically any material, i.e. vinyl films, dark colored films, embossed films, etc.
2. Can be used for time studies of corona treatment aging.
3. Can be used to quantify the uniformity of corona treatment across the web.
4. Can detect over-treatment and "backside" treatment.
5. Can be used with different test liquids.
